Getting there & around

Kyoto has no major international airport of its own — most travelers fly into Kansai International (KIX) near Osaka and take a train up, or arrive by Shinkansen from Tokyo (about 2h15m) or Osaka (about 15 minutes). This is the classic case where a JR Pass starts to pay for itself, since it's usually part of a multi-city route.

Within Kyoto, buses cover the temple circuit well, though many top sights are also walkable from each other in clusters. Grab an ICOCA IC card for buses and trains.
