Japan, answered for Filipinos.

The questions we get asked most about travelling to Japan from the Philippines.

Do Filipinos need a visa to visit Japan?
Yes. Philippine passport holders need a short-stay tourist visa. Since April 2025 you apply at a Japan Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, by online appointment, either yourself or through a PTAA or PIATA travel agency. The visa itself is free for Filipinos (VFS charges a service fee), and processing usually takes about 5 to 7 working days.
How much does a trip to Japan cost from the Philippines?
A comfortable mid-range week costs roughly ₱75,000 to ₱110,000 per person, covering flights, hotels, trains and food. A classic 6-day Tokyo–Kyoto trip comes to about ₱92,000. Cherry-blossom season is the most expensive time to go.
When is the best time to visit Japan?
Cherry blossoms peak from late March to early April, autumn leaves are best in November, and winter from December to February brings snow, especially in Hokkaido. Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons.
How long is the flight from Manila to Japan?
Direct flights from Manila take about 4 to 5 hours: roughly 4h15m to Tokyo (Narita), 4h05m to Osaka (Kansai), and around 5 hours to Sapporo (New Chitose).
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it for a first trip?
Usually only for multi-city trips. For a single city, buy point-to-point tickets and tap in with a Suica or ICOCA IC card. The nationwide JR Pass, which starts around ₱30,000, pays off mainly when you cover long distances such as Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima.
Is Japan safe and easy for first-time Filipino travelers?
Yes. Japan is very safe and first-timer friendly, with clean, punctual public transport and English signage in major cities. Carry yen, since many small shops are cash-only, though konbini and IC cards handle most daily spending and 7-Eleven ATMs accept Philippine cards.
What do I need at Philippine immigration when flying to Japan?
Have your passport (valid at least six months), Japan visa, return ticket, boarding pass and eTravel QR code ready. eTravel is free at etravel.gov.ph and must be done within the 72 hours before your flight. Carry proof of employment, funds and hotel bookings in case an officer asks more questions.
How does tax-free shopping in Japan work from November 2026?
From 1 November 2026, tax-free shops charge the full price including Japan's 10% consumption tax. Keep your receipts and leave the goods unused; customs confirms them when you leave Japan and the tax is refunded. Allow extra time at the airport for the check.
